Modern Slavery talk with Soroptimist International Cwmbran

At their recent meeting they were fortunate to have Professor Kim Ann Williamson MBE as our speaker.

Kim Ann explained that her passion for modern slavery had come out of her initial working as a civilian within the Met. Police in domestic violence and child protection. She later qualified as a youth worker and worked with the homeless and street workers.

Working for the Crown Prosecution Service, she saw the impact of crime on both victims and victims’ families.

In 2010 Stephen Chapman, the newly appointed modern slavery lead for Welsh Government invited her to join him and together they formulated the strategy for Welsh Government, forming the Anti-Slavery Leadership group, which Kim Ann led.

This in turn led to the whole training programme, which packages formed available UK wide.

Soroptimist International Cwmbran has long been invoked in this area and has held 3 public meetings on the subject.

A new project to assist with the awareness of young children, the Brave the Bear books, produced by the Brave Bear Trust, now part of Invisible Traffic and an international programme is being undertaken.

The book and appropriate training are available to schools.

If any local schools would like to know more, please contact Soroptimist International Cwmbran as they have some copies of the book.
