Trustee Volunteer of the Year is sponsored by Pontypool Community Council

Councillor Gaynor James is the Leader of the Council for Pontypool Community Council.

What encouraged you to sponsor the Torfaen Community and Volunteer Awards?

The work that volunteers do is absolutely vital to maintain and improve society and in some cases, their work is critical to saving lives. Volunteers give up their own time and energy to help and support and provide essential services for other people, whether that be family and friends or people in their neighbourhood or wider. We need more volunteers all the time and we feel that volunteers should be recognised and awarded for their work. The awards may also help and encourage other people to volunteer in future.

Why you’re sponsoring Trustee Volunteer of the Year?

The work that Trustees do is critical to running and maintaining local voluntary organisations, which co-ordinate and help individual volunteers to do what they do for their communities. Without Trustees giving up their time, energy and skills, society would be much poorer.

Why are awards like TCVA important?

At all times, but in times of community hardship especially, such as the current cost of living crisis, volunteers give a huge amount to other people. What they give can help feed people, clothe people, give people a roof over their head, help someone in a mental health or financial crisis and even save lives. Volunteers are critical to society and deserve to be recognised and awarded for all their vital work, to improve other people’s well-being.

Why is it important to showcase Torfaen in this way?

To raise the profile of those organisations, businesses and volunteers, to let other people know what services or help are available locally and to encourage and inspire others to get involved.
